Fitting a Hugger

One of the first things that most Honda Blackbird owners fit to their motorcycle is a hugger, it prevents road debris and dirt being thrown onto and damaging the mono shock - following the purchase of a new motorcycle, we decided to document the fitting.
Although this is a fairly straight forward process, we hope you find this information useful

In this case we have purchased a Pyramid hugger - why Pyramid? Well we've used them before and find the fit is excellent.

Tools needed:
8mm spanner
Allen keys (4 mm, 5mm, 6mm & 8mm)

12mm socket
Allow yourself approximately 1 hour.

Step 1: Unpack your hugger. If it has a protective plastic wrap we suggest, don't remove it all immediately, but expose the fittings

Step 2: Remove the riders foot peg plate from the gearshift side of the bike
3 fasteners to remove - identified in the picture

Step 3: This exposes the next fastener to be removed from the existing chain guard - identified in the picture

Step 4: Also remove the 2nd original chain guard fastener, which hides behind the exhaust.
Then remove the chain guard

Step 5: On the foot brake side of the bike, remove the two bolts shown which allows removal of brackets

remove brackets

Step 6: Keep these pieces - which will be needed later, once the hugger is fitted

Step 7: Time to remove the rear cowl from the bike. This is required as there is inadequate space, to get the hugger in with the rear cowl in place.
Remove the four indicated fasteners from the rear cowl on each side of the motorcycle

Step 8: Remove the grab rail - (one hand on either side and pull apart gently)

Step 9: You are now free to remove the rear cowl - (one hand on either side and pull apart gently sliding it over the rear of the bike)

Step 10: A little tricky, offer the hugger to the rear tyre in a vertical position, then roll the tyre forward to assist positioning of the hugger to the final position
(please ignore clear pipe seen here, as a scotoiler was fitted at the same time)

offering the hugger to the tyre

Step 11: Line up the hugger to the fixing bolt points - and fix the two supplied bolts and washers to the gearshift side - do not fully tighten yet
(please ignore clear pipe seen here, as a scotoiler was fitted at the same time)

resecure front bolt
fit rear bolt

Step 13: Ensure the hugger sits between the swinging arm and the brakes pipes (i.e. brakes pipes over the top of the hugger on the foot brake side of the motorcycle) - refit the clamps and bolts as shown

replace brackets ensuring brake pipes are sited over the top of the hugger

Step 14: The hugger is now loosely fitted in place, ensure that the hugger does not foul the tyre, the pyramid leaves a clearance of approximately 1/2 inch. Now tighten up the bolts securing the hugger on both sides of the motorcycle.
Should be safe now to remove the protective plastic coating - revealing the beauty.
Ta Da!! The hugger is now fitted and should be looking rather spanking!

the hugger is now fitted

Step 15: Ok time to refit the rear cowling and grab rail - (reverse steps 7,8 & 9 above) - oh and don't forget your seat!!

(Thanks to Deano and Wobbs for fitting and documenting photography)
