Melting Clocks - what do you mean?

.
.
After contacting Honda, we found out the problem which leads us to be able to advise our members how to eradicate the problem before it surfaces!

The history...

The problem first started to arise in 2001, owners reported what seemed to be like a “melting” effect on the dash board. This left owners puzzled, confused and worried. God knows, anybody would be! Nobody else has been able to come up with the DEFINATE answer…but IXXRA© thanks to Honda UK!!! So remember where you heard it !

What does the damage look like?

After spending the day in bright sunshine on the IXXRA stand at a local bike show - this was the result. Lucky it was only the dash and not the clocks as well. As you can see the damage is only light, but a definate melt line is visible. Yes folks even UK summer can do this.
The Cause….

Well believe it or not the cause is…..wait for it…….AFTERMARKET SCREENS! Can you believe that? No, neither could we!

Some aftermarket screens (the biggest offender is POWERBRONZE™, according to Honda UK). On sunny days what they seem to be doing is acting like a magnifying glass, thus melting the dashboard and/or sections of the clocks, depending the orientation of the bike. Like we where told POWERBRONZE screens are the biggest offender. We are unsure if it is flip, hyperflow or standard replacement screens.

Well, there ya go, now you know!

Just be careful, if you need a bubble type screen, it is best to go for the OEM (genuine Honda) 2001-2002 Blackbird screens, which are higher than the standard screen on older Blackbirds, but are interchangeable. Or if you're bike does have to stand out in bright sunlight for a prolonged period of time then consider trying to shade the screen. At least you know you’re not in for a nasty surprise on sunny days!!
