ENGINE OIL

These are facts and important advice that Honda (the company who made your Blackbird) recommended:

Question

I am just about due my first (500 mile) service on my new Blackbird. What oil specification should I use? Should I use synthetic oil?
Answer
You should NEVER use synthetic oil in your Blackbird if it has very low mileage.
Reason is that a lot of the engine components need to be ran in and bedded in. This is a vital process for engine longevity and durability.
The Honda Blackbird leaves the factory with full-mineral oil in the engine. Bits need to bed in, bits need to be worn in and this oil is designed to do just that. If lubrication properties in a particular oil (such as synthetic) are too slippy, then your engine will not be breaking in correctly and you WILL or CAN cause severe damage. In other words you are doing your engine more harm than good. Again, this has came directly from Honda.
Honda informed us that they have seen cases of Honda bikes burning oil through use of the wrong type of oil (namely synthetic) and MOLY based synthetic oils emulsifying and blocking oil ways! So always use 10/40W mineral oil for at least the first 8000 miles of use! Always use a trusted brand such as MOTUL, CASTROL, SHELL, HONDA or SILKOLENE to mention a few of the better known brands.

Question
I am due my 8,000 miles service on my Blackbird. I do not know what type of oil has been used in my bike previously what do you recommend?
Answer
If your bike has been Honda serviced previously, then you will have been running mineral oil for the past 8,000miles on your bike. This means that your engine will be in superb condition and bedded in perfectly. To be honest, at this stage the choice is up to you. Most oils today have far better lubricating properties than your engine requires anyway. You can still opt for mineral, but lots of people opt for SEMI-SYNTHETIC at this stage. Reason is that your engine has already been ran in so a little better lubricating performance at this stage really cannot harm anything at all. Either way, DO NOT use FULLY SYNTHETIC.

Question:
How much oil does the Blackbird take?
Answer:
During a simple oil change 3.8 litres
During an oil and filter change 3.9 litres
